Fundamentals of Harmonic Gear Transmission
Invented by American innovator C.W. Musser in 1955, the harmonic gear drive represents a revolutionary transmission mode that leverages the elastic deformation of flexible components for movement or power transmission. Unlike traditional mechanical transmissions that use rigid components, this flexible approach creates unique functionalities not achievable by other drives. Named for its symmetrical harmonic deformation process, the harmonic drive is known globally, called 'waveform drive' or 'flexible wheel drive' in the former Soviet Union, and 'harmonic drive' in the USA, UK, Germany, Japan, and other countries.

Operating Principle of Harmonic Deceleration
The principle behind harmonic gear transmission deceleration involves the interplay of the flexwheel, rigid wheel, and wave generator. The wave generator's elliptical CAM rotates within the flexwheel, causing it to deform. As the teeth of the flexwheel at the long axis of the elliptical CAM engage with the rigid wheel teeth, those at the short axis disengage. This continuous deformation and engagement process, known as 'snapping in' and 'snapping out,' results in a coordinated motion that transmits movement and power from the wave generator to the flexwheel through a sequence of biting, meshing, and disengaging actions.
